Czech Republic
Dobry den! Just dropping a note to anyone that cares. I'm currently in
Praha (Prague), Czech Republic. I flew into London Heathrow on Thursday
(25th?) and took a bus to Dover, slept in the station and took the ferry to
Calais, France the next morning. Eager to get out of expensive Western
Europe, I took a train to Brussels, Belgium down to Couvais (close to
Chimay), back to Brussels for the night. Train to Rotterdam and Amsterdam,
Netherlands the next night. Amsterdam to Frankfurt to Prague.
Nothing exciting has happened. An old woman in Couvais invited me into her
home for food, beer and cake. She also gave me a bottle of wine and beer to
take with me. I gave the bottles to a group of African musicians playing on
the street in Amsterdam. I'm still trying to get adjusted (or unadjusted).
I spent the day seeing the city and the sites (Prague Castle, Charles
Bridge, some old Jewish synagogues). However, I'm sick of big cities and
I'm sick of tourists, so I'm off to some less travelled areas of Czech
(Plzen, Ceske Budjovice, Telc, Brno). At some point I'll hit Budwies, home
of Budvar, the original Budweiser.
Farkas, you'll appreciate this: Cheap beer (~$1/.5L), cheap firearms of
any size and shape, and El Che and Kafka are gods. :)
I've tweaked my original plans, based on many factors. My journey will
probably take me throughout the Bohemian and Moravian regions of Czech.
Then to Slovakia for some scenic mountain areas, Hungary for a few weeks,
Romania, across the Carpathian mountains and Transylvania, to Bulgaria for a
few more weeks and finish in Turkey where I hope to spend my birthday.
I hope everyone is doing well. For those of you at Myriad, make sure you
have one in my honor. :) Remember, dip first into the pitcher, then the
glass. Fill until full, then keep filling.
When the little white travel card asked me for occupation, I put "Pilgrim."
I received a funny look from the customs agent. :)
